i'm in my crazy place
i had the last class of my undergraduate college career today. what? didn’t freshman orientation JUST happen? i’m slightly (or a little more than slightly) overwhelmed by the amount of work i have to finish between now and monday, and i’m sleep has definitely been in short supply. i’m in my crazy place, crying at least once a day (but not because i’m sad) and...

A Word for the Third Culture Kid →
What is described are feelings so deep that you can scarcely give words to them. Your throat catches and you try and describe intense longing and desire only to remain wordless. How do I know this? Because I have experienced it first hand. What we long to describe is “Saudade”. I have a clear recognition that they will never go back to the place where they feel most at home. I realistically...

our two-person book club
for the past two years my bf has read me childrens books for bedtime stories. because we are very rarely together in person this happens mostly over the phone and over skype, but one of my favorite things to do when we are together is snuggling under a blanket and laying my head on his chest as he narrates the 1961 edition of “the house on pooh corner” that he borrowed from the public...

This thing about perfect timing
I just received a call from my best friend and lover. This patrol has probably been the hardest so far and even though it’s so close to the end (8 days left on my patrol tracker!) I’ve been missing him extra these last few days. It was so good to hear that beautiful voice again, and just when I needed it most (thank you, God).

Changed
This morning we had a sunrise service on H & B’s front porch. We sat bundled up on their lawn chairs and sang at the top of our lungs to H’s guitar to remember the most powerful day in all of history. The day when death was shattered, when everything was changed. Think about being changed. Think about all the sadnesses and all the things we struggle with and every sin and all our...

camels and love
when we were growing up in the middle east, young men in our neighborhood used to approach our parents offering bride prices for their blonde little girls.  but in an email to the man of my dreams, my dad recently made a few things pretty clear: “I am not asking for 250 camels for Ruth! She is certainly worth more! Beyond price! You will have a great responsibility to care for her!” ...

in the midst of raising awareness about ongoing atrocities in central africa, invisible children has received much critizism in the past few days… from being accused of providing african nationals with guns (they don’t) to being labled “colonial” and being attacked for spending donation dollars on filming equipment rather than food for starving children in africa.  so...

mouse hunt!
unfortunately we recently discovered several co-inhabitants at win 3. we debated if we should adopt the cute little creatures and keep them as pets. they could teach us how to cook, lindsay suggested. just like in ratatouille. but they do make a lot of noise at night, even when we kindly request that they be quiet. but it was when one of them passed away under our kitchen sink and we were faced...

you make hearts come out of my eyes
we got to jersey at 1:30 am after six hours of driving with bloodshot eyes and and excessive yawning. we pulled into the driveway, got out of the car and by the light of our cell phones found our way into the backyard to look for the house key. but it wasn’t in its normal place-or in any place that we could think of, and we began calculating how uncomfortable it would be to spend the rest of...
