sea urchin sex and other things

they don’t even have sex. they fertilize externally, and it’s easily manipulated on a microscope slide. but here’s the thing: when i made sea urchin babies in lab the other night i remembered something that i forget far too often, and i got that kind of feeling that you get when you’re standing in the presence of God Almighty.

because watching the process of fertilization up so close, witnessing the cortical reaction, the first cell division, it’s breath-taking. it’s so intricate, so delicate, so perfectly coordinated, so complex yet so orderly. we’re one week into development, and the archenteron has formed, and the little guys are hard to keep up with.

i got that feeling again last night when I was studying anatomy vocab. Do you realize how many bones and ligaments and tendons and muscles we have in our feet? Well I do because they kept me up pretty late. But that’s besides the point. How often do we stop and meditate on feet? How beautifully designed they are, how carefully arranged, and how millions of systems work together every time we take a step.

I’m in utter awe.
